Origin
Origin is for the person who still remembers exactly who they were when they started.
I made this before I was properly awake, woken by a sliver of red light through a gap in the curtains bright enough to know, before I'd even stepped outside, that this sunrise couldn't be missed. I ran out into the paddock without stopping to dress properly, into a sky already deep red and edging toward orange and gold, cloud swirling overhead with only small breaks of blue showing through. The sun hadn't yet crossed the horizon, so the fence posts and horse shelter standing in the foreground sat in near-complete silhouette, holding the colour above them. The view, looking east across the plateau near home, deliberately echoes the very first photograph I ever made with real intent, a decade or more earlier, from almost the same spot.
What struck me, taking it, was standing in two moments at once. The uncertain beginner who first pointed a camera at this same paddock, and the photographer who now recognised, instantly and without hesitation, exactly what was worth capturing, without a moment spent second-guessing the decision.
Origin is for anyone who can still feel the distance between who they were when they started and who they've become since. Let it hang somewhere you see often, and it will keep marking that same full circle for you: proof that instinct you once doubted can become instinct you now trust completely, without having to think twice about it.
