Fits Just Fine
Different from everything around you, and completely at home.
Fits Just Fine is for the person who has always felt a little different from the place they're standing in.
I don't remember exactly where I made this. I remember that it was early in my photography, the light was low, and I was pushing both the camera and myself past what I knew I could do. I spotted a bright green tree frog on a rock, surrounded by more rocks, earth and a few leaves. A thread of warm light was getting through. He was settled and sleepy, as at ease as anything I've photographed. Frogs are unique in their colouring, texture and shape, and I've always loved the soft form of a green tree frog. This one could fit in the palm of your hand. What I wanted to capture was how well he fits that rock.
What stayed with me is how different he is. A frog is nothing like us. And he's alone, with no one else around, and still it feels as if he built the whole place around himself. He isn't trying to match his surroundings. He's simply settled, at peace with where he is. I find that more powerful than any amount of fitting in.
Fits Just Fine is for the days you feel like the odd one out. It isn't promising you'll find your people tomorrow. It's saying you don't have to change shape to feel at home. Spend time with a frog who is completely at ease on a rock, and your body starts to remember what that feels like. Practise that ease here, on your own wall, and it gets easier to find elsewhere.
